The 9th annual re-creation of the vintage sports car races on South Bass Island was held on Aug 27-30th. The original races around an island course of 3 miles were held from 1952-59 and 1963. The Put-in-Bay airport is now the location of the vintage road races, started back up in 2009. If you grew up watching and listening to the sounds of racing Alfa’s, Triump’s, MG’s, Porsches, Mini’s, Lotus, Elva’s, Bobsy and the like, then this event needs to be on your bucket list! There were a record number of entries for all race and street classifications. A large group from the DSG made the trip including Kurt Niemeyer, Margaret Kuhnell, Dick Weiss, Brent and Susan Fagan, Stan and Nancy Yarrish, Tom and Michelle Cole. Eric and Karen Diehl were also in attendance as American Modern Insurance was the title sponsor of the event! Other Cincinnati drivers also made the trip with their vintage Triump’s, Alfa’s, Volvo’s, A-H Sprite’s etc to provide a true 1950-60’s sports car experience. The weather mostly co-operated with just a few showers that made some races more interesting.
The track layout was lengthened a bit this year to 1.3 miles, with plenty of tight turns to make lapping a challenge. I will continue to add pictures from all classes to give you a better idea of what to expect if you make the four hour trip next year. Most events are free, except for the noon time track lapping for the Street division registered cars, and the catered food events. Hope to see you there next year.
